What to Know Before Self-Publishing Your Book
Guess what?
You have a story and your story MATTERS. I truly believe this — and so should you!
Believing in your story and the power it has to change lives is a profound, life-changing revelation. The next step, is getting your book OUT of your head and ON paper — easier said than done, right?
WRONG! Self-publishing your book is completely doable! Believe me — I’ve done it, and I’ve helped hundreds of authors share their story, too.
I’m here to tell you, it’s possible. It’s possible to write, edit, publish and promote your book WITHOUT getting a book deal or working with a “big name” publishing house.
YOU can publish your book, share your story and keep the full rights and profits.
Self-publishing has gained higher popularity and reputation in recent years — probably because the benefits of self-publishing are so undeniable.
Self-publishing is extremely author-friendly, and I actively share everything I know about it, with my community of like-minded authors, as frequently as I can.
Here are some of my favorite benefits of the self-publishing process.
Authors maintain full control of the book publishing process — you have the final say in editing, content, design, etc.
Self-publishing typically gets your book printed and published faster — publishing houses can sometimes take years to get a book on the shelves.
Self-publishing authors retain full rights to their book AND make more money.
Authors don’t have to rely on finding a publisher willing to pick up their manuscript — you call the shots!
Self-publishing authors set the price for their book.
Before making the decision between self-publishing and traditional publishing, there are also a few cons to self-publishing, every author should consider.
There is a higher upfront cost, as the author must foot the bill for editing, cover design, binding, printing, marketing, etc. — a traditional publishing house will pay you for the book and cover all the publishing costs. (Roughly 80% of book cost is attributed to production and distribution!)
While it’s not true for every self-publishing author, you may experience fewer sales and less visibility in your market without the backing of a big publishing house. It all depends on how committed you are to marketing and promoting your book!
Self-publishing authors may miss out on high-quality printers and designers, in comparison to traditional publishers — however, as a self-publisher, it’s still possible to find and utilize top-quality printers and designers.
When and if you decide to go the self-publishing route, make a checklist of the most essential priorities for getting your book published.
Writing your book makes YOU the EXPERT in your industry. Are you ready to reap the benefits of greater trust and credibility in your market?
