Taking Control of the Physical Spoke on Your “Wheel of Life”
Recently, we’ve been talking about the Zig Ziglar “Wheel of Life,” made up of seven “spokes” representing different aspects of your life. Here’s a reminder of those spokes:
This week, I want to talk about the physical spoke of the “Wheel of Life.” In mainstream media, there’s a huge amount of pressure on how we look. It’s become less about how we feel in our bodies and what is healthy, and more about what is considered “beautiful” or “normal.”
I’m not going to talk about dieting, food fads or trendy workouts because that’s not what the physical spoke is about. Being in good physical health is simply a necessity for making every other aspect of your life easier.
Strong physical health gives you:
Physical health allows us to handle the curveballs of life and deal with anything that comes our way.
When looking at your physical health, I want you to assess three core areas: sleep, nutrition and exercise.
How much sleep are you getting? Furthermore, how much quality sleep are you getting? That is uninterrupted, deep sleep.
For example, a sleep apnea sufferer may log 8 hours of sleep at night, but the quality of sleep they’re receiving is very poor, due to the multitude of health issues resulting from sleep apnea.
Another example is if you’re getting up excessively in the night to use the restroom, your body is disrupting your REM cycles, and you’re missing out on the benefits of deep sleep needed to recharge your brain.
You know better than anyone how well rested you are; be aware and responsive to the signs of exhaustion:
What’s on your plate? Is the majority processed, sugary, high-fat foods, or are you getting a decent dose of vegetables, fruit, lean protein and whole grains? It’s not to say you shouldn’t enjoy a bit of “junk” now and then, but it shouldn’t be your main source of sustenance.
On the other hand, are you eating enough? As business owners, entrepreneurs, parents, spouses, etc., we have a lot of responsibilities and sometimes in the craze of everyday life, feeding ourselves takes a back burner.
Try this:
Simply put: you’ve got to move. You might not be a marathoner, weightlifter, Olympic swimmer or yogi master, but you’ve got to find some form of exercise which works for your body and that you can sustain.
It can be as simple as going for a morning or evening walk, hitting the gym 2-3 times per week, taking a dance class or shooting some hoops — if you enjoy the activity, you’re more likely to stick to it!
